【摘要】:TheSCCWmaybepresentintheworkplaceatmospherewherethesematerialsaremanufactured,processed,transported,orused.ThetestmethodsdiscussedinthispracticecanbeusedtoprovideguidancewhenmonitoringairborneconcentrationsofSCCWintheseenvironments.Becauseoftheirvisibilitylimitations,asignificantfractionoftheverysmallthinfibersthatarepresentinsomesamplesmaynotbedetectedbyPCMorSEM.Therefore,TEMisconsideredtobethereferencetechniquefortheanalysisofairborneSCCW.TheTEMmustbeusedtodeterminebothfibercountandmorphologywhensamplesarefrompreviouslyuncharacterizedworkplacesormaterials.AlthoughTEMisthereferencetechnique,PCMorSEMareconsideredtobetheprimaryscreeningmethodsfortheanalysisofairborneSCCW.ParallelTEMmeasurementsshallbecarriedout,atleastinitially,toprovideanindexorrelativemeasureofthefractionoftotalfibersthatareseenbyPCMorSEM.Onlyininstanceswhenthispercentagehasbeenshowntobeatahighandreproduciblelevelmaythelowerresolutiontechniques(thatis,PCMorSEM)bereliedonexclusively.1.1Thispracticeisintendedtoassistindividualsinthesamplingandanalysisofsingle-crystalceramicwhiskers(SCCW),suchassiliconcarbideandsiliconnitride,intheworkplaceenvironment.ItdescribessamplingandanalyticaltechniquesusedtoassesstheairborneconcentrationandsizedistributionofSCCW,whichmayoccurinandaroundtheworkplacewherethesematerialsaremanufactured,processed,transported,orused.1.2TheprotocolscurrentlyinuseforasbestosandotherfibrousmaterialshavebeenusedasaguideindevelopingsamplingandanalyticalproceduresforcharacterizingfibersproducedfromthemanufactureanduseofSCCW.ThesamplingandanalysisprotocolsdescribedherehavebeenwrittenspecificallyforSCCW,however,theymaybeappropriateforotherman-mademineralfibers(MMMF).1.3ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
